A temporary resident permit (TRP) is an extra-ordinary legal remedy available under the Canadian immigration laws. It is normally issued to persons that are foreign nationals and that have compelling reason(s) to enter or remain in Canada.

If you are either inadmissible and/or if you do not meet the requirements of the Canadian immigration law, you can get a TRP and an open work permit in limited circumstances. Some of the circumstances for which a TRP can be granted are:

  • You are out of status and cannot survive without working;
  • You are a victim of family violence;
  • You are a victim of human trafficking;
  • You are criminally, medically, or financially inadmissible to Canada;
  • You have foreign criminal convictions;
  • You have violated Canadian immigration laws
  • You misrepresented yourself with Canadian immigration authorities
  • You have a genuine and temporary reason to remain in Canada
  • You cannot return to your country for protection related reasons
